Wow, I can't believe that it's been 6 years since I started Made by Aiza!
I had a mini celebration to mark the occasion and of course, it's not a birthday party without cake. I made myself this delicious Chocolate Guinness Cake, and decorated it with amazing holo and copper cake toppers made by my lovely friend Rachel!
Apart from the cake, I've had a little time to reflect on what I've achieved in the past year – it's not been a ground-breaking year with sales (in fact it's been a slow year) but I feel like I've gained some insight, learned more about myself and the direction I want to take the business.
What I've learned this past year
I was always chasing my tail when it came to getting things done. I felt like I never had enough time, the projects and tasks that I set out to do were never done quick enough and my to do list was ever expanding. I was all over the place, didn't have a plan and was completely overwhelmed and exhausted.
I knew I needed a plan and stumbled across Think Creative Collective's 4 Days to Sexy Systems Challenge. After doing the challenge, the fog started clearing. I took their Trello for Business course and it has completely CHANGED MY LIFE. I realised the reason I felt like I never had enough time was that I didn't! I work full time, so realistically, I only had 1-2 hours to work on Made by Aiza.
Once I had this revelation, I stopped getting frustrated about not getting things done. Instead, I planned accordingly, was realistic about the time needed for tasks and accepted that I couldn't get everything done in one go. I finally understood that I needed to be patient, and most importantly, be kinder to myself.
With all the planning going on, I also stepped back to think about how I can find joy while running my business. I'm still in the process of figuring it out, but one thing I do know is that I want to design more. So expect to see more collections from me soon!
To round it all up, my key takeaways are:
• Planning is key
• Be patient and kind to myself
• Get back to what I love doing – design more!
Although running my own business (plus working full time on top) has had its ups and downs, it's been fulfilling and without it, I wouldn't have met some very lovely maker friends! I'm very excited to see what the next 6 years will bring. Thank you for reading this post and thank you to everyone who has supported me, I really appreciate it!
Now, back to eating the cake... 😜
